Mix

The mix is a fundamental part in the developing process of a record or a movie. In this moment (after recording) some crucial aspects must be defined, such as the greater importance of certain sounds and instruments over others, their position in the stereo field and the creation of a three-dimensional space sensation in the listening.

The tonal balance of frequencies and the use of a properly dynamic range must be the ideal for the music, in this way the sound of your record, artist work or film will have a natural flow.

Audio restoration

This technique is used to delete the stationary noise that can be found in recordings, especially analog. Stationary noise can include the “hiss” of the tapes, the “hum” of the mics, the “buzz” of the signal transformers, the noise of the servomotor of a camera and others, as well as the low signal-to-noise ratio of some device that does not fall within the professional standard. It is also applicable to old vinyls and other old formats.

Declick is a technique used for the restoration of vinyls that over the years are full of imperfections. It is also a useful technique to eliminate short artifacts included in other sources, such as digital errors. All these devices do not usually more than 10 ms longer. Decrakle is a similar technique designed to eliminate artifacts and irregularities of greater duration.

Equalization techniques are useful to balance the listening. With them you can also eliminate low frequency hums inside the dialogues, as well as very high frequencies that are not important for this dialogue, in addition to other utilities.

Sometimes, due to problems with the mass of the electrical installation, we obtain an annoying signal of low frequency in the recordings, normally in 50 or 60 Hz. To delete these frequencies is something crucial to obtain a complete and clean auditory result in the low end, eliminating the “cloudy” sound sensation that often makes the experience of high quality listening something lose.

In some cases, unwanted sounds are sneaked and developed in a non-linear way; perhaps in a field recording the birds sing in a far position, a conversation of strangers or the siren of an ambulance that passes away from the place where the recording took place. These records can destroy all the work, however, the spectral repair can eliminate all those sounds from the recording.

The use of a selectively gain helps to obtain a balanced recording throughout the listening. For various reasons you can not always obtain a homogenous recording, the mic has moved, or perhaps it was the object to be recorded for a short or long period of time. We can adjust the gain at a specific time and at certain frequencies to solve those problems and that it is not necessary to make a new recording.

Pitch Shifting is a technique developed to change the tone of a signal without changing its length. We can do it, but we can also vary the length, the tone and both at the same time. We return the original tone and duration to old recordings or simply adjust your recording to the desired time.

Listen an example

In the following audio files you can listen the difference between a restored file and the original. This is part of a restoration work done for Slow Town electronic music label, who re-released an old record despite not being able to access to the original recording. A copy of an old vinyl was recorded and it was restored.
